چکیده

Surface strain rate is best observed by fitting a strain-rate ellipsoid to the measured movement of a stake network,or other collection of surface features, using a least-squares procedure. Error of the resulting fit varies as (LAt/7T)~ , where L is the stake separation, At is the time period between initial and final stake survey, and n is the number of stakes in the network. This relation suggests that if n is sufficiently high, the traditional practice of re-visiting stake-network sites on successive field seasons may be replaced by a less costly single-year operation. A demonstration using Ross Ice Shelf data shows that reasonably accurate measurements can be obtained from 12 stakes after only 4 days of deformation. The least-squares procedure may also aid airborne photogrametric surveys in that reducing the time interval between survey and re-survey could permit better surface-feature recognition.

Sustained high basal motion of the Greenland ice sheet revealed by borehole deformation

Ice deformation and basal motion characterize the dynamical behavior of the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS). We evaluate the contribution of basal motion from ice deformation measurements in boreholes drilled to the bed at two sites in the western marginal zone of the GrIS. We find a sustained high amount of basal motion contribution to surface velocity of 44–73% in winter, and up to 90% in summer. ...

Estimation of present-day glacial isostatic adjustment, ice mass change and elastic vertical crustal deformation over the Antarctic ice sheet

This study explores an iterative method for simultaneously estimating the present-day glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), ice mass change and elastic vertical crustal deformation of the Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) for the period October 2003–October 2009. The estimations are derived by combining mass measurements of the GRACE mission and surface height observations of the ICESat mission under the...

Hyperion Correction

Two Hyperion images of the Greenland ice sheet are used to characterize errors in the VNIR and SWIR detector arrays of Hyperion. Spatial variability in detector output is seen in both arrays and, in both cases, is largest at the shorter wavelengths and decreases as wavelength increases. Standard deviations of the maximum variability are 40 DN for the VNIR array and 123 DN for the SWIR array. Te...

Tracer transport in an isochronal ice-sheet model

The full history of ice sheet and climate interactions is recorded in the vertical profiles of geochemical tracers in polar ice sheets. Numerical simulations of these archives promise great advances both in the interpretation of these reconstructions and the validation of the models themselves. However, fundamental mathematical shortcomings of existing models subject tracers to spurious diffusi...

The Cryosphere Greenland ice sheet contribution to sea-level rise from a new-generation ice-sheet model

Over the last two decades, the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) has been losing mass at an increasing rate, enhancing its contribution to sea-level rise (SLR). The recent increases in ice loss appear to be due to changes in both the surface mass balance of the ice sheet and ice discharge (ice flux to the ocean). Rapid ice flow directly affects the discharge, but also alters ice-sheet geometry and so ...
